Name: Andy Godden
Occupation: Business Consultant
Current role: Chair. Elected Board Member to 31 July 2021
Why did you join the Trust Board? I originally applied for co-option o the Trust Board in 2014 because I am a firm believer in the founding principles of Swansea City Supporters Trust but felt it needed to improve and evolve in certain areas, particularly to best represent the members and meet the challenges of being part-owner of a top-flight football club.
What attributes/skills are you able to bring to the Board? I am a qualified management accountant with 20 years’ experience with major multinational companies within the IT Services industry, mainly in a Financial and IT consultancy role. This has given me significant experience in managing major projects, implementing new processes and working with a wide variety of stakeholders, including senior American executives. For the last two years I’ve been part of the Finance sub-group which regularly reviews the club’s monthly management accounts and annual published accounts.
How do you feel the Trust can further develop its representation of members and the wider fan base? The Trust is currently facing a fundamental dilemma – how to best represent and engage with our members and the overall fan base, whilst also maintaining a productive working relationship with the majority shareholders of the football club.
These two areas have proven difficult to balance in recent times, particularly due to the way the relationship was thrown together due to the disgraceful actions of the selling and buying parties in 2016.
At all times the Trust has to remember its fundamental responsibility, which is to its members. As a members organisation, all decisions taken should be in the interests of the members and engagement with those members is absolutely critical.
Our challenge is to ensure that our members are fully engaged in the decision making process and agree with the direction taken. This can only happen with more frequent engagement across a wide range of platforms and transparency of the decisions and actions taken.
