Welcome, Luke Williams, Ryan Harley, and George Lawtey.
The Swansea City Supporters’ Trust would like to welcome Luke Williams as the new Head Coach of Swansea City. We are delighted to see the conclusion of the coaching search today and are pleased that Luke, his assistant Ryan Harley, and new first-team analyst George Lawtey will have a couple of weeks to review and assess the squad before our next Championship fixture, as well as an opportunity to identify potential transfer targets to help reshape parts of the squad in this window.
A key piece of feedback from supporters during the search was to find a candidate who could return us to ‘The Swansea Way’, which is what the success of the club was built on. We believe that Luke will bring that to our club, where he served as an assistant coach in 2021 under Russell Martin.
We hope that Luke’s familiarity with the club and the city will shorten the learning curve that all new Managers and Head Coaches go through and help him to quickly embed elements of the attractive football style that his Notts County team became known for in 2022/2023, where they achieved promotion to the Football League.
This is a positive appointment and ends a month of uncertainty for supporters and staff alike. We would like to once again praise Alan Sheehan for his work as interim coach, with Monday’s victory over West Bromwich Albion serving as brilliant conclusion to his management of the team. We are delighted to see that Alan will stay on with Swansea City and continue his development as a coach, whilst providing support to Luke Williams and the first-team squad.
This was undoubtedly a long and tough search, and we have shared the frustration and uncertainty expressed to us by supporters over the last month. The Trust Board has been actively engaged by the club through Chairman Andy Coleman and Sporting Director Paul Watson in the recruitment process and kept apprised of all developments by Andy, Paul, and Ken Gude (Chief of Staff). We have also taken the opportunity during this process to provide feedback and challenge that we have heard directly from supporters on both the style of play and the importance of recruiting a Head Coach who can build connections with supporters.
We are all supporters of this great club and want the best for it, on and off the field, and we know that these two traits are critical for any successful Swansea City Head Coach. We are sure the Jack Army will get behind Luke as he seeks to improve performances and results in the second half of this season.
Separately, we continue to discuss important matters with the club, especially around communication and providing as many opportunities as possible for supporters to engage with the club.
We’d like to wish Luke, Ryan, and George the very best as they settle into their new roles and look forward to seeing the team in action this weekend against Morecambe.
