Name: Phil Sumbler (elected Board Member until 31 July 2020)
Occupation: Head of Financial Services
Current role: Chairman
Why did you join the Trust Board: Or maybe this time it is why did I rejoin the Trust board. For almost 20 years I have had a huge passion for fan involvement in football clubs. The concept of a Supporters Trust has always been something that I have backed and have been an advocate of the model that Swansea deployed so successfully for many years. Unfortunately that model has changed since the change in ownership at the club and the voice of the Trust has not been silenced but maybe muted in some quarters. We need to work hard to bring that back to life and make it heard more often and that is why I wanted to stand again for the Trust board and drive forward that change with the support of all my board colleagues.
What attributes/skills are you able to bring to the Board. Well, first and foremost it is 12 years experience, 11 of which were at the head of the organisation. We should never under estimate the impact that a familiar face can have within the membership. In addition I have led successfully many teams in my work environment and continue to do so with great success and look to bring those skills to the Trust. I clearly have a great knowledge of events that led to the club sale and believe that this knowledge and leadership skills will be invaluable in leading the Trust through the mediation and legal process.
How do you feel the Trust can further develop its representation of members and the wider fan base. In recent years the Trust has become too silent in the eyes of many members and the wider fan base. We need to work hard at that through the use of all forms of media available to us. I know there is much work done behind the scenes by members of the Trust board but that will never be visible if we don’t stand up and shout about it. W have to communicate better and more often and as Chair I pledge to all fans that this is what I wlll strive to make happen.
